R-22 Refrigerant Phaseout: What You Need to Know

Older air conditioners still use the R-22 refrigerant, also commonly known as Freon®. While it remains an effective refrigerant, it has disastrous effects on the ozone layer. For this reason, the government is requiring that AC manufacturers phase out R-22 and replace it with other refrigerants.

You Can Keep Using Your Old AC

Even though the R-22 refrigerant phaseout in Collin County, TX is already in effect, there's no need to panic. As long as you keep up with maintenance and stay watchful for refrigerant leaks, you can continue using the old unit.

If you do suspect a leak, stop using the air conditioner. Your HVAC contractor will know how to handle the refrigerant safely. At this point, you will need to consider one of the other two options since R-22 is no longer available on the market.

Modify Your AC to Comply With the R-22 Refrigerant Phaseout in Collin County, TX

The second option is to keep your old air conditioner with a few modifications. As your AC currently sits, it can only take R-22. However, your HVAC technician can modify the unit to accept a new refrigerant.

This is more cost-effective since it means you won't need a full AC installation immediately. You'll only pay for the parts and labor needed to retrofit your current system.

Install a New Air Conditioner

The third choice can save you stress, money, and time. You'll get ahead of the curve by installing a more modern AC. As a result, you won’t have to worry about R-22 leaking into your home, and you won’t have to retrofit your outdated unit.

As a bonus, complying with the R-22 refrigerant phaseout in Collin County, TX, will help you save on energy costs. Newer models are more energy efficient and are better at cooling larger spaces. In this way, buying a replacement can help you keep your home cooler all summer.
